International Biosafety and Biosecurity Capacity-Building

International co-operation and alignment among regulatory authorities through the IEGBBR contributes to the continued development of knowledge and expertise that strengthens and advances global biosafety and biosecurity regulatory oversight systems. The work of the IEGBBR contributes to ongoing efforts that exist internationally, and strengthens national/regional compliance with commitments under the World Health Organization International Heath Regulations and the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention.

The IEGBBR can serve as a focal point of technical expertise for countries that require technical support to develop or strengthen their national biosafety and biosecurity policies and capacities, including priority partner countries under the Global Partnership. As national regulatory authorities in biosafety and biosecurity, members’ expertise includes fields such as inspections, risk assessment, safety and security measures, and regulatory oversight tools.

IEGBBR member countries undertake bilateral work to develop or strengthen regulatory biosafety and biosecurity capacity, such as the Danish-Kenyan Biosecurity Partnership Program or the projects undertaken in Uganda by the Netherlands, in keeping with their commitments to international biosafety and biosecurity initiatives and agreements.
